Your Visual Resume

Recently, I had the privilege to present one of our signature workshops, “Your Visual Resume,” to a group of students at a local women’s college. The students were fantastic and eager for advice on how to navigate the tricky wardrobe transition from classroom to office. Now that that the caps and gowns have been put away and the focus for many college grads in our midst is on job hunting, I thought I’d share the top five tips from my presentation that resonated the most with this group of students. Feel free to use them as a refresher course for yourself and/or share them with young women that you think would benefit from this super simple (and cost-effective!) guidance.

The Skinny on Jeans Shopping

Buying a great pair of jeans can be a daunting experience. With the exception of finding a suitable swimsuit, jeans top the list of most stressful shopping experiences for most women (and often men too!). With a multitude of brands, cuts and styles, you may become overwhelmed before you even step in the dressing room! Here are 5 ideas I frequently share with female clients interested in cutting jeans shopping time in half while arriving home with selections they love to wear:

5 Fresh Spins on Navy Blue

Being married to a State Trooper, I’ve acquired a certain level of respect for all things blue. This season, navy blue is commanding my attention in many new ways. It is timeless, exudes confidence, and says ‘perfectly polished’ like no other color. It has been a personal thrill to see this sophisticated hue take over the racks of my favorite stores. Here are 5 fresh spins on navy that I have been using to effectively update the spring (and summer!) wardrobes of my female clients.  I hope a few resonate with you and make it easy to put this perennial spring favorite to work in your wardrobe too.

Train Your Eye

My freshman basketball coach was the first person I recall telling me I had a “good eye.” Back then it was because I could consistently put the ball in the basket from outside the key. Given the fact that I was vertically challenged and seriously lacking in most other basic basketball skills, I remember this feedback making me feel like I had a special gift. These words never get old, especially with what I do now professionally. As a stylist, having a “good eye” is about picking winners off a sales rack or easily making outfits from what first appears to be a closet full of clothes with nothing to wear. Like being on a basketball court and making the ball swish, it’s magical when a well-trained eye helps you present yourself better. You can quickly dismiss items that you know won’t work while embracing others that you may never have considered.

Revisiting Paris

One of the best parts of being a stylist is experiencing a small part of the trips your clients take. Researching the weather, reviewing their itineraries and coordinating outfits that will help them feel terrific each day they are away is very rewarding. When I was recently asked to help one of our virtual clients pack for 6 weeks in Paris, I also got to relive my own days traveling there as well. In this week’s blog post, I share some of my favorite international fashion insights.

Après Skiwear for Spring Breakers

Like most New Englanders, I have just about had it with the day-to-day nuisances caused by so much snow here this winter. However, I must say that one of the up sides of this weather for me and my family is the extended ski season we now have. One of my favorite things to do is to pack our family up and head to the slopes. We are all outdoor enthusiasts and, as a stylist, I keenly understand the ease of our trip preparation when our ski clothes are organized and ready to go. Parka? Check. Ski pants? Check. Goggles? Check. Snow boots? Check. Checklists are great. Yet, when you go on a ski vacation that lasts longer than a day or two, packing can get tricky, especially when you want to dress well for the après ski scene, which is often as memorable an experience as skiing itself. Whether you’re hitting the local slopes with friends and family or heading out west or internationally for March break, there is an après ski wardrobe that will fit your budget, taste and personality.

50 Shades of Gray

A home improvement project brought me to the paint store this past weekend in search of the perfect shade of gray for our new bathroom. We picked out a few samples, tested them on the walls and finally settled for a shade that made everything in the room fall into place with the intended style. Extra bonus, I can now say I’ve seen “50 Shades of Gray!” Whether you decide to see the movie or not, it is fun that “gray” is getting so much “play” right now. Not only is it a box office sensation and hot base neutral in home décor, but it’s also a great way to lighten up your wardrobe as we head into spring.

The Power of Red (& Pink!)

We love the color red and are always looking for new ways for clients to wear it well. In professional situations, we often treat it like a neutral for women, grabbing red jackets, skirts, pants, blouses, dresses, shoes and bags that are appropriate for business to give a pop of color to what is often an otherwise fairly dark wardrobe. Where I personally have the most fun incorporating red into a wardrobe is with evening wear. Coordinated well, it can be bold, sexy and eye-catching all at the same time.

Shovel Out Your Closet

Shoveling out after yet another snow storm here in New England got me thinking. We clear out the snow so we can hit the road fast and effortlessly. When I first work with a client in their closet, we are often “shoveling out” so that they too can hit the road in record time, regardless of the weather. Here are five quick tips to help you “shovel out” your own closet (and snow days are great days to tackle this process!)
